Peter Travis

Peter Travis is a commercial barrister at Gibbs Chambers in Brisbane, specialising in banking and finance litigation and financial services regulatory enforcement. He has practised at the Queensland Bar since 2008 and appears in the trial and appellate courts across Australia. Peter is briefed through Hemmant’s List.

Peter has appeared as counsel in more than 100 published decisions in trial and appellate courts across Australia, including the Federal Court and the Full Court, as well as in the Supreme and District Courts of Queensland, the Queensland Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of New South Wales.

Peter’s practice focuses on banking and finance litigation and regulatory enforcement. However, he continues to practise across a range of commercial disputes, including shareholder disputes and restraints of trade.

Before joining the Queensland Bar, Peter practised as a senior California trial attorney in Los Angeles. From 2002, Peter worked directly under leading California trial lawyers, representing major film and television studios, including Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount and Fox, in fast-paced, high-profile commercial litigation, intellectual property and First Amendment matters. As a trial attorney, Peter acquired hundreds of hours of experience in state and federal courts and deposition rooms across the US.

Peter’s experience as a California attorney has seen him appointed by the Supreme Court as an examiner under the Hague Evidence Convention for the taking of US depositions of witnesses in Australia.

Peter was first admitted as a solicitor in New South Wales in 2001 after taking up his first position in the intellectual property and media group at Allens.

As a law student, Peter sought opportunities to gain advocacy experience. He was head of the moot court, ranked third-best oralist at a US constitutional law moot in Chicago, and represented UQ at the World Universities Debating Championships.

Peter Travis studied law at the TC Beirne School of Law at the University of Queensland, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours in 2000 and a Bachelor of Arts in 1999.

Peter Travis was first admitted as a solicitor in NSW in 2001, before going on to be admitted to:
